Effect of self-management and education based on the transtheoretical model on pain control and self-efficacy of patients with lumbar disc herniation

Abstract
Objective To investigate the effect of self-management and education based on the transtheoretical model (TTM) on pain control and self-efficacy of patients with lumbar disc herniation (LDH). Methods According to sequence of hospital admission, 56 LDH patients in the control group were given routine pain management and education during hospitalization; another 56 patients in the observation group were given self-management and education based on the TTM. The degree of pain by Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) and the self-efficacy by Chronic Pain Self-efficacy Scale (CPSS) were observed and compared between two groups. The satisfactory degree of patients with nursing service was evaluated by a self-made questionnaire. Results After a three-month intervention, patients in the observation group had a lower BPI score compared with those in the control group (P < 0. 01). Patients in the observation group achieved higher scores of The Self-Efficacy for Pain Management (PSE), Self-Efficacy for Functional Abilities(FSE) and Self-Efficacy for Coping with Symptoms(CSE) compared with those in the control group(P < 0. 01). Patients in the observation group were more satisfied with the nursing service compared with those in the control group (P < 0. 01). Conclusion The self-management and education interventions based on the TTM are effective to relieve the pain degree and improve the self-efficacy of LDF patients.关键词
