Abstract

This experiment was conducted to study the effects of zinc oxide on growth performance, immune function and rectal microflora of neonatal dairy calves. Twenty?four neonatal Holstein dairy calves were ran?domly allotted to four groups with 6 calves per group ( 2 males and 4 females). Calves in the control group ( Zn?0 group) were fed only milk and starter diet; calves in experimental groups were fed milk and starter diet supplemented with 40 ( Zn?40 group) , 80 ( Zn?80 group) and 120 mg zinc oxide ( Zn?120 group) ( as zinc) everyday, respectively. The trial lasted for 14 days. The results showed that different levels of zinc oxide had no significant effect on the average daily gain, milk intake, starter intake, total feed intake and feed to gain ra?tio of calves ( P>0.05). Compared with the control group, the diarrhea rate of experimental groups was re?duced, but the difference was not significant ( P>0.05). With the dietary zinc oxide supplemental level in?creased, the contents of immunoglobulin G, immunoglobulin M and immunoglobulin A in serum of experimen?tal groups were linearly increased ( P<0.05 ) , the rectal Lactobacillus content was linearly increased ( P<0.05) , and the rectal Escherichia coli content was tended to decrease linearly ( 0.05≤P<0.10). In conclu?sion, different levels of zinc oxide have no effects on the growth performance and the diarrhea rate of neonatal dairy calves. However, compared with the control group, the serum immunoglobulin contents and rectal Lacto?bacillus content of experimental groups are increased, and rectal Escherichia coli content is decreased.[ Chinese Journal of Animal Nutrition, 2019, 31(6) :2693?2700]
