Research Progress on the Roles of Copper-binding Proteins in Cancer★

Abstract
Copper is an indispensable metal ion in every organism. It plays a vital part in the process of biochemistry in each organism. Most of the copper ions in the body are protein-bound. This review summarized the roles the copper ions and copper-binding proteins play in cancer development, and the relationship between copper-binding protein and cancer. The roles were also discussed of copper-binding protein in enhancing efficiency of platinum-based chemotherapy. Especially, in this article, we also discussed how copper-binding proteins like mediator of ErbB2-driven cell motility 1 (MEMO1), lysyl oxidase (LOX), LOX-like proteins and secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC) regulate chemotherapeutic drugs at the molecular level therapy. Considering the importance of copper in the process of tumor invasion and metastasis, a further understanding of the function of copper-binding proteins may provide new targets for cancer control.关键词
