Determination of benzo[a]pyrene in mainstream cigarette smoke using matrix matched solvent calibration-gas chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry method

Abstract
A novel method to quantify trace benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) in mainstream cigarette smoke by matrix matched solvent calibration-gas chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (MMSC-GC-MS/MS) was developed. The chromatography was conducted by injecting the extract directly after extracting Cambridge filters with oscillating extraction method. The preparation process of matrix matched solvent, injection pattern and MS parameters were investigated, and sample preparation steps and target’s extraction pattern were optimized. The results showed that: 1) Under the optimized conditions, the calibration curve was linear (R2=0.999 6) in the target concentration range of 1.04-20.8 ng/mL with the limits of detection and quantitation at 0.14 and 0.46 ng/cig. respectively, which were lower than the reported values of the current Chinese National Standard method. The spiked recoveries of different samples ranged from 94.62% to 104.81% with intra- and inter-day relative standard deviations (RSDs) at 3.13%-3.80% and 5.41%-6.94% , respectively. 2) No significant deviation was observed between the results of B[a]P in mainstream smoke of 18 slim and conventional cigarettes with different labeled tar levels determined by the proposed MMSC-GC-MS/MS method and the Chinese National Standard method. This method was suitable for the rapid determination of B[a]P in mainstream cigarette smoke with the advantages of convenience, lower organic solvent consumption and higher sensitivity.关键词
