Abstract

Objective : To create a three-dimensional (3D) model of the central skull base for doctors to master the regional anatomy. Methods : Continuous thin sections in the transverse and coronal planes were performed with the freezing milling technique. After segmenting, labeling, and extracting organs in serial sections, we reconstructed the 3D model of the central skull base using Amira software. Results : Seven hundred and eighty thin coronal sections, four hundred and thirteen transverse sections of the base region in central skulls were obtained. The salient structures could be tracked across sections. A 3D model of the central skull base that can be rotated and zoomed in an arbitrary fashion was successfully produced. There were some non-anatomical anomalies in the model because it was reconstructed with organs from two head spicimens. Conclusion : The 3D model of the central skull base displays fine anatomical features. It is beneficial for surgical education in general and provides a means of preoperative rehearsal of skull-base surgical procedures.
