The Nature, Connotation, and Characteristics of Planning Heritage

Abstract
Planning heritage, as an interdisciplinary concept that combines urban-rural planning and heritage protection, not only expands the types of cultural heritage, but also broadens the scope of research on planning history. However, at the current stage of theoretical construction, the intersection of multiple disciplines blurs the nature and connotation of the term. Taking the perspectives of both planning and heritage, the paper argues that planned heritage is essentially a product of ideology and the built environment which interact and reinforce each other. It reflects the wisdom in the construction of the human settlement in the history and it embraces theoretical thoughts, design methods and systems, and the built environment. The planning heritage is the unity of consciousness and existence, of ideas and reality, of content and form, and of spiritual and material wealth. Compared with the built heritage, the planning heritage reflects the role of planning in shaping the urban form, the connection between the top and the bottom, and the tripartite unity in expression. Through the interplays between power and order, the coexistence of paradigm and forms, and the mutual reinforcement between texts and the physical environment, planning heritage represents the unity of opposing sides. The three dimensions of "kernel - representation", "prototype-type", and "focus - dislocation"defines the concept of planning heritage. By clarifying the nature, connotation, and characteristics of planned heritage, the paper paves the way for the systematic construction of its theoretical system.关键词
