Abstract

Effects of exogenous microbial pretreatment of food waste were investigated for five single microbial strains and one compound microbial agent.Upon the individual pretreatment with this set of strains,the physical and chemical properties of food waste were evaluated,along with the growth and development of black soldier fly and the nutritional composition of insects.As a result,the pH of the materials rapidly decreased to 4.2,then slowly stabilized at 3.5,likely because the resultant acidic environment from fermentation prohibited further microbial growth.In addition,the microbial hydrolysis and metabolism of nutritional components in food waste significantly impacted the output of total sugar and soluble chemical oxygen demand(SCOD),and the fermentation process also generated a large number of volatile organic acids(VFA).Compared with the control group(CK1),both the concentration of total sugar and SCOD in the treatment group with compound bacterial agent(F)decreased the most(56.93%and 12.39%,respectively).Regarding the production of organic acids,the treatment group with Pediococcus pentosus(B)performed the best,with VFA concentration reaching 10 627.14 mg/L.Notably,the average weight and total larva weight of black water fly increased in all treatment groups,with Zygosaccharomyces yeast group(E)as the best performer.On the 7 th day,the average weight and total larva weight of this group reached 230 mg and 22.37 g,respectively,representing 17.95%and 22.30%increase over the control group(CK1).Pretreatment also improved the prepupa rate of black soldier fly in this group(E),with half of the prepupae growing up to larvae within 5 days,i.e.,2 days sooner than the control group.Our research results can provide technical support for the efficient transformation of food waste by black soldier fly.
