Effect of 8-Week Altitude Training on the Risk of Exercise-induced Bronchoconstriction among Race Walking Athletes

Abstract
Objective:The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of 8-week altitude training on the risk of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction(EIB)of race walking athletes.Methods:Forty-three professional race walking athletes were recruited to participate in this study.Their lung function,respiratory tract inflammatory factors and markers of epithelial cell damage were measured and compared in low altitude area(T1)and initial(T2)and final(T3)stages of altitude training.Results:After 8-week altitude training,(1)the EIB incidence of the race walking athletes increased from 16.3%in the initial stage(T2)to 34.9%(T3);(2)the forced expiratory volume(FEV1)of all athletes decreased significantly(T1 4.08±5.79%vs T3 8.25±6.38%,P= 0.007),and for the subgroup analysis,male athletes increased slightly(T1 5.42±5.06%vs T3 7.85±5.88%,P=0.250)whereas female athletes increased significantly(T1 3.26±6.54%vs T3 8.73±6.91%,P=0.003);(3)the levels of inflammatory factors such as basophils(P=0.002),neutrophils(P<0.001)and serum IL-6(P<0.001)were significantly increased,and CC16(P= 0.001)was also significantly increased.Conclusions:Altitude training could stimulate the inflammation of the respiratory tract and aggravate the damage of airway epithelial cells,leading to a significant decrease in FEV1 and an increase of the EIB incidence.In addition,compared with male counterparts,female athletes have higher risk of EIB during altitude training.关键词
