The Influence of Social Stratification on the Fertility Desire of Women of Childbearing Age from the Perspective of"Cost-Utility"

Abstract
The fertility intentions of women in the childbearing age group,who are the primary participants in reproduction,are critical for the effective implementation of reproductive policies.This study utilizes a sample of 2480 respondents from the 2018 China General Social Survey(CGSS).Drawing on the theoretical framework of"cost-benefit"in childbearing,we employed a Logit model to analyze the correlation between social stratification,pension attitudes,and the intention to have multiple children among women in the childbearing age group in China.The findings are as follows:(1)Different social strata significantly influence the intention to have multiple children among women in the childbearing age group.Specifically,individuals with a high school diploma,college education,or higher education level demonstrate a lower intention to have multiple children compared to those with an elementary school education or lower.Furthermore,compared to farmers,managers or professionals,ordinary non-agricultural workers and individuals in other occupations exhibit a lower intention to have multiple children.The intention to have multiple children decreases as income levels rise,and the groups identifying themselves as middle or upper class demonstrate significantly higher fertility intentions than the lower-class group.(2)Pension attitudes play a moderating role in the relationship between social stratification and fertility intentions.关键词
