Abstract

The settlement of three pulp fibers(bleached softwood pulp,bleached bamboo pulp and bleached bagasse pulp)was compared to analyze the effects of fiber types and characteristics on the gel point concentration(Cg),further to provide the key information of fiber net-work during the dewatering of pulp fiber suspension.The results showed that there was a negative relationship between the Canadian Stan-dard Freeness(CSF)and the Cg.With the increase of fiber water retention value(WRV),the Cg increased,and the effect of WRV on the Cg was affected by fiber type.With the increase of fiber length-weighted length(L),the Cg decreased.When the L increased to 1.2 mm,the Cg basically remained unchanged.The change of Cg at a high aspect ratio(>20)could be well explained by the crowding number theory or the effective medium theory.However,both theories cannot directly explain the change of Cg at a lower aspect ratio,and non-physical parame-ters(such as surface charge)of fibers needed to be considered.
