Residual Stress Control of Orthotropic Steel Bridge Deck Based on Vibration Stress Relief Technology

Abstract
To minimize the welding residual stress in orthotropic steel bridge deck,and to assess the effectiveness of vibratory stress relief(VSR)applied in bridge steel structures,a full-scale model of ortho-tropic steel bridge deck was manufactured and its welding residual stresses were adjusted by using VSR.Thereafter,the welding residual stresses were measured by the blind-hole method to evaluate the effects of the procedure.The results show that the magnitudes of welding residual stress in the weld zone are signifi-cantly high,which are up to or higher than the material yield strength.After vibrating,the welding resid-ual stresses have been reduced to below the material yield strength both in the weld zone on the deck plate and in the area on the weld surface.In addition,the residual stress field has become more uniform.If the stress level is much higher,the effect of VSR would be much better.After vibrating,the welding residual stresses in the area away from the weld are slightly increased,but still remain at a relatively low level.It is suggested to apply the VSR technology to adjust welding residual stresses for bridge steel structures.关键词
