The role of macrophages in the activation of fibroblasts after myocardial infarction

Abstract
Macrophages play an important regulatory role in the inflammation and fibrosis process after myocardial infarction.Macrophages are classified into CCR2+ macrophages and CCR2-macrophages based on the presence or absence of CC chemokine receptor 2(CCR2)expression.CCR2-macrophages are classified into pro-inflammatory Ly6Chi CCR2hi CX3CR1lo macrophages and anti-inflammatory Ly6Clo CCR2lo CX3CR1hi macrophages according to the expres-sion level of Ly6C.Ly6Chi macrophages produce inflammatory cytokines in the early stage and acute inflammatory phase after myocardial infarction,whereas Ly6Clo macrophages are recruited in the later stage after infarction,secreting anti-in-flammatory cytokines and growth factors.Macrophages directly activate fibroblasts by paracrine inflammatory factors such as interleukin(IL)-1β,IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α,or indirectly play a role in activation of fibroblasts by promoting the expression of transforming growth factor-β.This article provides a review of macrophage sources in the myocardium and their role in fibroblast activation after myocardial infarction.关键词
