Abstract

Hydrogeological conditions are crucial for geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste,and play a significant role on the site suitability and long-term safety.This paper focuses on the Xinchang candidate site for geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste,China.We further analyzed the permeability of fractured pluton,groundwater dynamic field,hydrochemical and isotopic characteristics and groundwater formation mechanism in the Xinchang candidate site,and these foundings could provide key hydrogeological information in the support of site suitability assessments for HLW disposal.The results show that the groundwater at the Xinchang candidate site comes from the local precipitation,the chemical and isotopic composition is mainly controlled by evaporation,and the main hydrochemical type is Cl·SO4-Na.Groundwater level spatial distribution remains consistent with the terrain,with a pattern of high in the west and low in the east of the site,as well as high in the shallow zone and low in the deep zone.It is characterized by a typical recharge zone,but the overall recharge capacity is poor.Besides,The hydraulic conductivity of the faults and pluton of the site at disposal depth is generally low,and the corresponding value is less than 10-10m·s-1.The age of shallow groundwater at the site is less than 5.4 ka,while the age in the deep zone could reach 13.2 ka,indicating a slow rate of groundwater renewal.Therefore,we could conclude that hydrogeological conditions at the Xinchang candidate site have poor recharge,low permeability of fractured pluton,weak vertical hydraulic connection and water-rock interaction,and slow renewal rate,which is favourable for geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste.
