Abstract

The consolidation states of saturated clay include normal consolidation,over-consolidation and under-consolidation.Discriminating the concepts associated with various consolidation pressures and evaluation indicators of soil consolidation,as well as analyzing the three types of soil consolidation states,is advantageous for gaining a precise understanding of the soil's consolidation state.The results show that it can only be used to determine whether the soil is in an over-consolidation state when the ratio of pre-consolidation pressure to effective consolidation pressure is used to define the over-consolidation ratio.However,it cannot be used as an evaluation indicator of normal consolidation and under-consolidation states.When using the ratio of pre-consolidation pressure to total consolidation pressure(defined as consolidation ratio in this article),it can be used to evaluate the three different consolidation states of soil.Through analysis,it can be concluded that both the normal consolidation state and the over-consolidation state belong to stable states,while the under-consolidation state is unstable.If there is excess pore water pressure inside the soil,it will gradually dissipate over time.When using consolidation ratio and consolidation degree defined based on excess pore water pressure for evaluation,it has equivalence and can reflect the changes in soil consolidation degree.
