Survey on knowledge,attitude and behavior of depression in non-medical college students

Abstract
Objective To understand the current situation of knowledge,attitude and behavior related to depres-sion among non-medical college students,and to provide scientific evidence for the prevention and treatment of depres-sion.Methods A self-designed questionnaire was used to investigate the knowledge,attitude and behavior related to depression among 1 385 non-medical college students from 5 universities in Guangdong Province.Results The clinical symptoms of depression were known in the following order:suicidal ideation or behavior(76.53％),sleep disorders(72.92％),moodiness(71.41％),and complete lack of knowledge(15.52％),none of which met the national re-quirement of 85％.Attitudes towards people around them with depression were as follows:hope for care and assistance(41.66％),acceptance(31.19％),sympathy(12.27％),indifferent(11.84％),fear/avoidance(0.94％),dis-crimination(0.79％),and disgust/rejection(0.72％).If they themselves had depression:adjusted slowly on their own(38.84％),sought psychological counseling(81.59％),visited the psychiatric department of a hospital(58.77％).94.08％of respondents expressed their willingness to participate in the educational propaganda for the prevention and treatment of depression,and 93.94％expressed their willingness to receive such education.Conclusion Knowledge of depression among college students did not meet the national requirement of 85％.Health education for the prevention and treatment of depression is insufficient,but college students have clear awareness,urgent demands,and positive attitudes towards it.Therefore,professional knowledge education on depression should be strengthened,and it is suggested to con-duct joint medical-school health education that is highly professional,in-depth,and comprehensive.关键词
