Inverted U—shaped relationship between physical activity and life satisfaction among Chinese older adults:Mediating role of depression

Abstract
Objective:To investigate the relationship between physical activity and life satisfaction of Chinese older adults and the mediating role of depression.Methods:STATA 15.1 software was used to conduct descriptive statisti-cal analysis of the basic information such as life satisfaction of older adults over 60 years old in the 2018 China Health and Elderly Care Tracking Survey data,to analyze the relationship between physical activity and life satisfac-tion of older adults by using the baseline regression model and the PSM(Propensity Score Matching Method),and to examine the mediating role of depression between physical activity and life satisfaction by establishing the mediator model.The mediating role of depression in the relationship between physical activity and life satisfaction was investi-gated by establishing a mediation model.Results:Physical activity had an inverted U—shaped relationship with life satisfaction of the elderly(P＜0.001),a U—shaped relationship with depression(P＜0.001),and a negative correla-tion between depression and life satisfaction(P＜0.001);The thresholds for the inflection point of the inverted U—shaped curve for the rural and urban elderly were 3.133 and 3.455,respectively,and the thresholds for the inflection point of the inverted U—shaped curve for male and female elderly were 3.231 and 2.938,respectively,and depression mediated the relationship between physical activity and life satisfaction.Conclusion:There is a certain dose effect of physical activity in enhancing life satisfaction of the elderly,the influence of physical activity on life satisfaction of the elderly is heterogeneous,and physical activity of the elderly can either directly affect life satisfaction or indirectly af-fect life satisfaction through depression.关键词
