Abstract

In integrated photonic circuits,the optical mode-spot converter can realize the adiabatic optical transmission between two optical waveguide devices with different mode sizes,which plays an important role in reducing the insertion loss of optical link.In silicon photonic chips,silicon optical mode-spot con-verters are usually used to connect single-mode waveguides and multimode waveguides,and the most com-mon application is the interconnect between grating couplers and single-mode waveguides.Due to the large size of the traditional linear mode-spot converter,valuable chip area is wasted.To realize ultra-compact adiabatic mode-spot conversion,a novel parabolic mode-spot converter is proposed and experimentally demonstrated.The test results show that the parabolic mode spot converters work well in O-band and C-band.When the size length is 54 μm and 100 μm,the optical insertion losses for C-band device are 0.25 dB and 0.18 dB,respectively.When the size length is 64 μm and 110 μm,the optical insertion losses for O-band device are 0.25 dB and 0.09 dB,respectively.The measurement results agree well with the simula-tion results.
