Evidence of Clinical Randomized Controlled Trials in Treatment of Lumbar Disc Herniation with Traditional Chinese Medicine Decoctions

Abstract
Objective:To systematically sort out the clinical randomized controlled trials(RCTs)of treating lumbar disc herniation(LDH)with traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)decoctions by using the method of evidence map,and to understand the distribu-tion of evidence in this field.Methods:The RCTs involving TCM decoctions for LDH were retrieved from the China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI),Chinese Citation Database(CCD),China Biology Medicine(CBM),PubMed,Embase,Cochrane Library,and Web of Science,with the time interval from January 2013 to February 2023.The distribution of evidence was presented in a combination of text and graphs.Results:A total of 102 clinical studies were included,and the overall number of publications showed an increasing trend over time.The treatment courses ranged from 1 to 4 weeks.The results of methodological quality evalua-tion showed that the current clinical studies of TCM decoctions for LDH were of low quality.These studies cared more about the in-dicators of pain,functional impairment,clinical efficacy,safety,and less about TCM syndrome/symptom scores and indicators of im-aging,blood test,quality of life,economy,and recurrence.Conclusion:TCM decoctions have unique advantages in the treatment of LDH,while they also have limitations.The clinical studies on the treatment of LDH with TCM decoctions have low quality.The clin-ical RCTs remain to be improved in quality,so as to provide adequate evidence to support the effectiveness and safety of TCM de-coctions in the prevention and treatment of LDH.关键词
