Negative Body Image of Females From the Sexual Selection Theory Perspective:The Effect of Menstrual Cycle Phase on Implicit Body Image Beliefs

Abstract
Objective:The current study aimed to investigate the effect of the menstrual cycle phase on negative implic-it body image beliefs of females.Methods:We recruited 34 healthy females,who had stable menstrual cycles and did not take exogenous hormones before and during the study.Implicit body image beliefs were tested in the participants during the ovulatory phase(OP)and the mid-luteal phase(LP)with the Relational Responding Tasks.Results:The results showed that a significantly higher implicit desire to be thin(belief about ideal body image)was observed in the OP than in the mid-LP.However,the implicit beliefs about actual body image were similar in the two phases.Conclusion:Sexual selection might play a role in shaping the negative body image of females by increasing the implicit desire to be thin during the late FP.关键词
