The Influence of Trait Empathy on Moral Judgment:An ERP Study Evidence

Abstract
Objective:To explore the neural mechanisms underlying the impact of trait empathy on moral judgment.Methods:Firstly,44 participants were divided into high and low trait empathy groups based on their Interpersonal Reactiv-ity Index scores.Then,all participants completed the moral judgment task during which their behavioral and neural respons-es were recorded.Results:Behavioral results showed that individuals in high trait empathy group assigned more blame to immoral behaviors comparing to individuals in low trait empathy group.EEG results showed that moral behaviors induced greater N1 and N2 amplitudes,but smaller LPP amplitudes,than immoral behaviors did.Moreover,for individuals in high trait empathy group,moral behaviors elicited significantly more negative N1 than immoral behaviors did,whereas there was no such difference for individuals in low trait empathy group.Conclusion:Individuals in high trait empathy group are more sensitive to moral content and have a moral intuition processing advantage during moral judgment.关键词
