Elbows Can only Turn in?——Moral Identity Moderates the Effect of Responsive Goals on Negativity-validating Behavior

Abstract
Objective:Based on social identity theory and the principle of least effort,this research investigated whether responsive goals toward close others increase negativity-validating behaviors and the moderating role of moral identity.Methods:Study 1 used an experimental method to manipulate subjects'responsive goals,and Experiment 2 used the Re-sponsive Goals Scale,Self-Importance of Moral Identity Scale,and the Negativity-validating Behavior Scale to explore neg-ativity-validating intentions in imaginary situations and everyday negativity-validating behaviors,respectively.Results:Study 1 found more negativity-validating behaviors in the experimental group compared with the control group;Study 2 found a significant positive correlation between responsive goals and negativity-validating behaviors and symbolization of moral identity moderated the impact of responsive goals on negativity-validating behaviors.The higher one's symbolization of moral identity was,the lower effect of responsive goals on negativity-validating behaviors was.Conclusion:Responsive goals toward close others increased one's own negativity-validating behaviors,but the effect depended on the individual's level of symbolic moral identity.关键词
