Abstract

Objective:To explore the mediation effect of communication effectiveness in the impact of supervisor-stu-dent conflict on postgraduates'depression and the moderation role of personal initiative.Methods:998 postgraduates par-ticipated in the study and they were asked to completed the Student-Teacher Relationship Scale,the Supervisor-Student Communication Effectiveness Scale,the Patient Health Questionnaire(PHQ-9)and the Personal Initiative Scale.Results:(1)The conflict of supervisor-student positively predicted postgraduates'depression and negatively predicted the communi-cation effectiveness;(2)the supervisor-student communication effectiveness mediated the effect of the supervisor-student conflict on depression;(3)personal initiative moderated the association between supervisor-student conflict and postgradu-ates'depression,and between supervisor-student conflict and their communication effectiveness.Higher level of postgradu-ates'personal initiative predicted the lower impact of supervisor-student conflict on postgraduates'depression and their communication effectiveness.Conclusion:The supervisor-student conflict predicted the postgraduates'depression through the supervisor-student communication effectiveness,and high levels of personal initiative weakened the negative ef-fect of supervisor-student conflict on both their communication effectiveness and postgraduates'depression.
