Abstract

Recirculating aquaculture systems(RAS)are seen as a sustainable solution to meet the growing global demand for seafood.The most critical water treatment process in RAS is the oxidation of harmful nitrogenous compounds,and moving bed biofilm reactors(MBBR)are the default design choice for removing harmful nitrogenous compounds.Suspended carriers are the core component of MBBR systems,and the most important indicator of carrier performance is specific surface area.Two irregular porous suspension carriers were scanned and modeled using the micro-CT technique to obtain specific surface area,and the results showed that the specific surface area measured by the micro-CT was more suitable for evaluating carrier performance than the BET(Brunauer,Emmett and Teller)method.
