Abstract

The technology of Rock-Filled Concrete(RFC),which is simple in process,fast in construction,low temperature rise of hy-dration heat,economical and environmentally friendly,has been widely used in engineering projects.However,there is no precedent for the application of RFC to construct the main dam of a reservoir for a pumped storage power station,and there is a lack of comparative studies on RFC technology for dam construction and Roller-Compacted Concrete(RCC)technology for dam construction.The main dam in lower reservoir of Hubei Pingtanyuan pumped storage power station is taken as an example,and a comparative study between an RFC dam and an RCC dam is carried out in terms of construction scheme,construction organization,comprehensive unit cost and environmen-tal benefits.The results show that RFC dams have simpler construction techniques,fewer types of construction machinery,and a shorter construction period of 1 month.The comprehensive unit cost decreased by about 4.37%to269.14 yuan/m3 compared to RCC dams;the life cycle carbon emissions of RFC dams are reduced by10 876.2 tCO2 compared to RCC dams,a reduction of 11.15%.RFC is a more low-carbon and environmentally friendly dam construction technology.
