Abstract

Malignant catarrhal fever is a lymphoproliferative disease caused by ovine γ herpes virus 2(OvHV-2)that can cause death in ruminants.In this study,two sick cattle suspected of malignant catarrhal fever occurred in a pasture in Ordos,Inner Mongolia,were diagnosed by pathological examination and pathogen nucleic acid detection.At the same time,the pathogen nucleic acid detection was performed on the nasal swabs of sheep raised in the same group.The results showed that two sick and dead cattle had high fever before death,accompanied by blindness and tears,erosion of nasal and oral mucosa and other head mucosal inflammation.After pathological dissection,the respiratory and digestive tract mucosa was found to be red and shed,forming pseudomembranous and other pathological lesions,which had typical character-istics of malignant catarrhal fever.Histopathology showed that dead cattle were accompanied by non suppu-rative encephalitis.Importantly,multiple organs and tissues such as lymph nodes,lungs,kidneys,and spleen showed significant small vessel necrotizing inflammation.The results of pathogen nucleic acid detection showed that the ORF75 DNA fragment of OvHV-2 virus was amplified from various tissues of two cattle and from sheep nasal swabs.These findings indicate that two sick and dead cattle suffered from malignant catarrhal fever caused by OvHV-2,and it is highly likely that OvHV-2 from sheep was transmitted to the cattle.
