Abstract

The dispersion of nano-titanium dioxide(TiO2)in polypropylene(PP)is closely related to the mechanical and antibacterial properties of the material.PP,TiO2,N,N'-ethylene bis-stearamide(EBS),and maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene(PP-g-MAH)were blended using a twin-screw extruder to prepare PP/TiO2 blends with different dispersant EBS content.The effects of dispersant EBS and compatibilizer PP-g-MAH on the dispersion and antibacterial effect of TiO2 in PP were compared.The results show that both EBS and PP-g-MAH can improve the compatibility between TiO2 and PP,resulting in enhanced mechanical and antibacterial properties of the PP/TiO2 blends.The small molecule EBS can enter the PP phase region,reducing the regularity of PP crystals and hindering the formation of lamellar crystal structures.PP-g-MAH,acting as a bridge,increases the compatibility between TiO2 and PP,inducing early crystallization of PP,leading to a better crystalline structure and higher antibacterial activity of the PP/TiO2 blends.
