Abstract
In 1910,Gu Cheng translated and published the Least Squares Method,which is the earliest translation in China to systematically introduce the least squares method.The base of this book is the 7th edition(1897)of the A Text-book on the Method of Least Squares written by American civil engineer Mansfield Merriman(1848-1925).When Gu Cheng translated Mansfield Merriman's book,he mainly used free translation and did not fully copy the content of the original text.He further standardized the naming of Chinese terms and adopted the symbols commonly used in the West at that time.After Jueyi Shuxue,the Least Squares Method reintroduced Western probability theory and mathematical statistics into China,and its role in the history of Chinese probability theory and mathematical statistics cannot be ignored.However,due to the limitations of the social environment,lagging disciplinary development,and the emergence of similar works,the impact of the Least SquaresMethod is very limited.关键词
