Physiological characteristics of sorghum root systems under water and nitrogen regulation at different stages

Abstract
[Objective]Water and nitrogen fertilizers form an essential foundation for crop growth in arid regions.Examining the regulation of water-nitrogen interactions on sorghum root systems can enhance sorghum yields and improve water and fertilizer utilization efficiency.[Methods]Two sorghum varieties(Jinza 17 and Jinza 108)were used as experimental materials,subject-ed to varying water and nitrogen treatments.The water conditions comprised three levels:severe drought stress(W1,soil wa-ter content 25% ~35%),moderate drought stress(W2,soil water content 45% ~55%),and well-watered conditions(W3,soil water content 65% ~75%).Nitrogen treatment included three levels:low nitrogen(N1,0 g·kg-1 urea/soil),medium ni-trogen(N2,2 g·kg-1 urea/soil)and high nitrogen(N3,4 g·kg-1 urea/soil).The aim was to investigate the impacts of these treatments on the physiological characteristics of sorghum roots during different growth stages.[Results](1)The effects of wa-ter treatments on sorghum root indices were significantly higher than that of nitrogen treatments,with sorghum roots indices showing a significant decrease under severe drought stress.(2)Both cultivars exhibited increased root weight and activity with rising nitrogen application under similar water conditions,notably significant at the medium N level.Meanwhile,soluble sugar,soluble protein,and proline content accumulated faster at medium and high nitrogen levels.(3)A significant interaction effect between water and nitrogen were observed during the heading stage of Jinza 108 but had no significant effect on Jinza 17.(4)Across various water and nitrogen treatments,all root indices of Jinza 108 surpassed those of Jinza 17,showing strong stress re-sistance.[Conclusion]The present study reaffirms that sorghum root system metrics are greatly impacted by water availability.Optimal nitrogen application could promote root growth and activity,maintain higher osmotic regulatory functions,and miti-gate root damage due to water stress.The water-nitrogen interaction effects vary among different sorghum varieties,with Jinza 108 demonstrating heightened resistance to drought and barrenness.关键词
