Abstract

To study the mechanical behavior of circular concrete-encased concrete-filled double-skin steel tube(CFDST)columns under axial compression and propose a design method for calculating the ultimate strength,a total of ten circular concrete-encased CFDST stub columns were tested under axial compression with the CFDST ratio and the sectional diameter as testing variables.The failure process,failure mode,longitudinal strain and transverse deformation coefficient were investigated,and the key parameters affecting the axial stiffness,strength index and ductility index were determined.Then,a finite element model(FEM)was developed.The full-ranged process,the contact stress and the influences of critical parameters were analyzed.Based on the above analysis,the design method for the ultimate strength of the circular concrete-encased CFDST stub column was further proposed.The results show that the circular concrete-encased CFDST stub column can exhibit compatible deformation performance.An increasing confinement factor will improve the composite effect of the specimens.Increasing the characteristic stirrup value will improve the ductility index.When the CFDST ratio increases from 0.5 to 0.6 and 0.7,the ductility index improves by 9.6%and 18.7%,respectively.When the sectional diameter increases from 220 mm to 260 mm and 300 mm,the axial stiffness improves by 22.2%and 43.8%,respectively.At the peak load,the external reinforced concrete(RC)component reaches the corresponding ultimate strength,and the internal load borne by the CFDST component is less than its ultimate strength.The contact stress between the RC component and the CFDST component is negligible.The ultimate strength of the circular concrete-encased CFDST stub column can be effectively predicted by introducing the strength reduction factor.
