Changes in Awareness of Cancer Prevention and Treatment Knowledge among Sichuan Residents Based on Propensity Score Matching

Abstract
Objective:To investigate the changes in the awareness of cancer prevention and treatment knowledge among Sichuan residents in 2019 and 2021.Methods:Two cross-sectional surveys targeted the residents aged 18 years in Sichuan province were separately conducted(one was conducted from April to May 2019,and the other was conducted from April to May 2021)using convenient sampling,and their knowledge on cancer prevention and treatment were investigated through an anonymous questionnaire from the official WeChat account of Sichuan Cancer Center.The 2021-year subjects were assigned to the processing group,while the 2019-year subjects to the control group.Propensity score matching(PSM)method was used to equalize the basic information of the respondents.After PSM,we analyzed the changes in awareness of cancer prevention and treatment knowledge among Sichuan residents over these two years.Results:Via PSM,a total of 20,140 pairs of respondents in the two surveys were successfully matched.After achieving a balanced distribution of the respondents in terms of gender,age,occupation and economic zone,the 2021-year respondents still had statistically higher overall awareness rate of cancer prevention and control knowledge than did the 2019-year respondents(67.96%vs 63.02%)(χ2 = 1,085.564,P<0.001).However,the gap between the overall awareness rates in the two surveys decreased from 5.09%before PSM to 4.94%after PSM.Conclusion:Compared with 2019,the awareness rate of cancer prevention and treatment knowledge among Sichuan residents was improved in 2021.In the future,a systematic approach should be adopted to improve their professional cancer prevention and control knowledge,so as to improve the overall awareness rate among residents in Sichuan.关键词
