Abstract

For the freight traffic source from"road to rail"and"bulk to container",based on the variability of container transport demand and regional imbalance,the significance of the study is to realize the balanced development of containers and cars,improve the container transport organization mode,so as to make full use of railway transport capacity and improve the quality of railway freight service.Focused on a new organizational mode for container trains—fixed-trainset shuttled block trains,this study explored the operational conditions and flow routings of cars.A node-arc model of the organization of car flow for the shuttled block container train was established with the objective of minimizing the total distance travelled by empty cars in order to solve for the selection of arcs of the shuttled block container trains and the freight flow volume allocated on the arcs.Considering the running path characteristics of the shuttled block container trains,the arc-path model was developed with the objective of minimizing the total transportation cost of empty cars to solve for the shuttled block container train running paths and the freight flow volume allocated on the arcs.With the utilization of 20 ft 35 t general purpose containers,the waybill data of 35 t general purpose container was adopted as an empirical study.The algorithm was designed to search for feasible paths for the shuttled block container trains.The proposed models were solved by Gurobi solver to verify the validity of the model and obtain the car flow organization,and their differences in terms of calculation efficiency and solution results were compared.The computational results show that the node-arc model is effcient but unable to visualize the running paths and allocation results.The arc-path model is less efficient for solving large-scale networks,but can directly obtain the running paths and allocation solutions.The operation scheme of shuttled block trains can be adjusted according to the spatial distribution of transport demand and the complexity of transport organization to improve transport efficiency.The research results can provide theoretical methods for enriching railway freight products and designing operation schemes for the shuttled block container trains.
