Abstract
When the series of uprisings against Wang Mang's rule culminated in a decisive victory,Liu Xuan,also known as Emperor Gengshi of the Han Dynasty,together with his subordinates,began to orchestrate a political intrigue against,and eventu-ally executed,Liu Yan(刘縯).This event was an outcome of the internal strife and discord among different interest groups with-in Emperor Gengshi's regime.Their joint action to execute Liu Yan was out of different motives.Emperor Gengshi viewed Liu Yan as a potential threat to the throne.Zhu Wei(朱鲔)and other Lvlin Army(绿林军)generals aligned themselves with Em-peror Gengshi in order to solidify their own military and political power.Shentu Jian(申屠建)sided with the emperor not only to show loyalty but also to take his private revenge on Liu Yan.Li Yi(李轶)also turned against Liu Yan in order to obtain more military and political interests.After Liu Yan's death,Emperor Gengshi took the opportunity to divide the Chongling Army(舂陵军)into several divisions,all under the command of Liu Ci(刘赐),who was named the General-in-Chief.Liu Yan's subor-dinates and troops were reorganized and put under the watch and control of other generals.Liu Yan's younger brother Liu Xiu was granted an official position as a means of pacification while alertness against him was still palpable.Meanwhile,within the Chongling Army(舂陵军),there were also different political choices and manoeuvers.The core members of the Chongling clan such as Liu Liang(刘良),Liu Jia(刘嘉),Liu Zhi(刘祉),and the Nanyang clans represented by Li Tong(李通),Li Yi(李轶),and Li Song(李松)continued to follow Emperor Gengshi on his expeditions,while Fan Hong(樊宏),Yin Shi(阴识)and Deng Feng(邓奉)chose to stay in Nanyang.Liu Xiu and his followers went to Hebei to blaze a new trail.Although the death of Liu Yan helped Emperor Gengshi temporarily get rid of the threat to the throne,the emperor lacked effective restriction and control over the generals of the Lvlin Army(绿林军)and over Liu Xiu,which was an important factor leading to the disinte-gration and defeat of the his regime.Later,Nanyang clan forces were absorbed and integrated by the Eastern Han regime.关键词
