摘要

Abstract

The presence of circadian rhythms causes diurnal fluctuations in brain structure and function.Currently,most neuroimaging studies do not control for the biological variable of time of day,making results less reproducible as well as complicating interpretation.In these years,the rapid development of multimodal MRI,voxel-based morphometry(VBM),diffusion magnetic resonance imaging(dMRI),functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI),magnetic resonance spectroscopy(MRS),and arterial spin labeling(ASL)methods have been used to study the influence of circadian rhythm on brain structure and function.Most studies have found significant effects of time of day on brain structure and function,but there are inconsistencies in the results reported.Current research has focused only on daytime time points and two or three-time points during the day,lacking research on nighttime time points and multiple time points during the day.We provide a review of recent progress in the study of circadian rhythms in MRI of the brain in order to increase awareness of time as a biological variable that influences neuroimaging studies.
