Abstract

Objective:From the perspective of intergroup relations,this study aims to investigate the relationship between clinician empathy and doctor-patient relationshipamong medicalpostgraduates,and to test the mediating effect of intergroup anxiety and the moderating effect of social identity on the mediating effect.Methods:Aquestion-naire survey was conducted among 481 resident trainees who were currently studying for a masters degree in clinical medicinewith the Social Identity Questionnaire,the Jefferson Medical Student Empathy Scale,the Intergroup Anxiety Scale,and the Difficult Doctor-Patient Relationship Questionnaire-10.Results:①Clinician empathy could signifi-cantly and positively predict doctor-patient relationship(β=0.35,95%CI=[0.27,0.42]);②Clinician empathy af-fected doctor-patient relationship through the mediating effect of intergroup anxiety,mediating effect accounted for 37.5%;③The latter part of the mediation path was moderated by social identity(β=0.07,95%CI=[0.01,0.13]).Specifically,high social identity weakened the negative predictive effect of group anxiety on the doctor-patient rela-tionship.Conclusion:Medical postgraduates'clinician empathy can not only directly affect the doctor-patient rela-tionship,but also indirectly affect the doctor-patient relationship through intergroup anxiety,and social identity plays a moderating role in the second half of the mediation model.
