Effect of childhood environmental unpredictability on narcissism:Mediating role of Insecure attachment

Abstract
Objective:According to evolutionary life history theory,this study aims to explore the relationship be-tween childhood environmental unpredictability and narcissism,as well as the mediating role of insecure attachment.Methods:A group of 513 college students completed the childhood unpredictable environment scale,narcissism scale and experiences in close relationships inventory.Results:①Childhood environmental unpredictability was positively correlated with narcissism,insecure attachment,attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance(r=0.17,0.35,0.35,0.17;P＜0.01),narcissism was positively correlated with insecure attachment and attachment anxiety(r=0.22,0.32;P＜0.01);②Insecure attachment played a partial mediating role between childhood environmental unpredict-ability and narcissism,with effect value of 0.035;③Attachment anxiety played a completely mediating role between childhood environmental unpredictability and narcissism,with effect value of 0.055.Conclusion:Childhood environ-mental unpredictability influences narcissism in adult with insecure attachment as intermediary agent,and attach-ment anxiety especially.关键词
