Abstract

Poly-and perfluoroalkyl substances(PFASs)are widely detected in drinking water.In this study,four typical PFASs,perfluorobutanoic acid(PFBA),perfluorohexane sulfonic acid(PFHxS),perfluorooctanoic acid(PFOA),and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid(PFOS)were used as target compounds,and two commonly used household water purification components,activated carbon filter and reverse osmosis(RO)filter,were investigated on the PFASs removal efficiencies with tap water spiked samples.Water quality parameters before and after treatment were analyzed meanwhile.Results showed that for the activated carbon filter,the removal efficiencies of PFHxS,PFOA,and PFOS were 72%~86%within 7 times of the rated treated water volume,while the removal efficiency of PFBA was relatively lower,and showed an obvious decline trend after two times of the rated treated water volume.PFASs removal efficiencies showed no obvious correlation with permanganate index,total dissolved solids,and inorganic anions.For the RO membrane,PFASs removal efficiencies could achieve as high as 90%~100%,with PFBA removal efficiencies showing a slow decline trend in the late stage of water treatment.A good correlation was found between the removal efficiencies of PFHxS,PFOA,and PFOS and the concentrations of total dissolved solids,chloride,and sulfate during the experiment.Therefore,household activated carbon filters and RO membranes had a good removal effect on PFASs in drinking water.This study can provide a reference for removing PFASs in household point-of-use water purifiers.
