Survey on knowledge of osteoporosis among people aged 20 years and above in Chongqing

Abstract
Objective To ascertain the cognitive status of Chongqing residents aged 20 years and above with re-spect to osteoporosis.Methods A multi-stage stratified cluster random sampling method was utilized to extract a repre-sentative sample comprising 768 males and 1083 females from the population aged 20-87 years in Chengqing.The partici-pants were required to complete a questionnaire,namely the osteoporosis knowledge assessment tool(OKAT),along with providing basic demographic information.Following that,a subsequent analysis was undertaken to ascertain the level of awareness regarding knowledge related to osteoporosis among the respondents.The osteoporosis self-assessment tool for Asians(OSTA)was utilized to evaluate osteoporosis risk in postmenopausal women,while dual energy X-ray absorptiom-etry(DXA)was employed for bone mineral density measurement.Results Our findings indicated that the prevalence of osteoporosis awareness among individuals aged 20 years and above in Chongqing was 12.8%with 11.3%among males and 13.9%among females.The awareness of osteoporosis-related knowledge diminished with the increasing age,with rates of 29.3%for individuals under 45 years old,18.6%for those aged 45-54,13.9%for those aged 55-64,and 11.4%for in-dividuals over 65 years old(P＜0.001).The awareness level of osteoporosis among the urban population was higher than that of the rural population across all age groups(P＜0.05).Among postmenopausal women the awareness rate of osteo-porosis was 9.1%.Conclusion The awareness rate of osteoporosis among residents in Chongqing is relatively low,espe-cially in rural residents and postmenopausal women.It is necessary to strengthen public education and health promotion ef-forts targeting osteoporosis.关键词
