Promotion of tall fescue seedling gemination and growth by adding low levels of Taihu sediment

Abstract
[Objective]The current research aimed to study the effects of adding Taihu Lake silt to cultivation substrates on the germination and early growth of tall fescue seeds,and to promote the application of water silt in landscaping and gardening.[Methods]Cultivation substrates were prepared by mixing Taihu Lake silt with vermiculite in gradients of 25%volume.Five treatments were designed:100%vermiculite(T1),25%Taihu Lake silt+75%vermiculite(T2),50%Taihu Lake silt+ 50%vermiculite(T3),75%Taihu Lake silt+25%vermiculite(T4),and 100%Taihu Lake silt(T5).Seeds were sown in different cultivation substrates,and the cultivation effects of each treatment were evaluated based on plant performance indica-tors such as germination rate and plant height.Additionally,the effects of the leachate from each treatment on seed germination was investigated.To identify the key factors affecting the growth of seedlings,hydroponic experiments were conducted using leachate from each treatment,and various growth indicators of seedlings from each treatment were measured.[Results]The re-sults indicated that with increasing addition of Taihu Lake silt,the root length,germination potential,and germination index of seeds were significantly improved,with a 100%germination rate observed in all treatments.As a cultivation substrate,the op-timal addition of Taihu Lake silt was 25%.However,with increasing levels of Taihu Lake silt,the germination rate,plant height,chlorophyll content,root length,and biomass of tall fescue seeds exhibited a significant declining trend.Correlation analysis indicated a negative correlation between cultivation substrate bulk density,pH,alkaline nitrogen,available phospho-rus,quick-acting potassium,organic matter content,and growth indicators of seedlings.Moreover,with increasing levels of Taihu Lake silt,the leachate from the cultivation substrate showed a significant promoting effect on the growth indicators of tall fescue seedlings.[Conclusion]The addition of Taihu Lake silt at 25%in cultivation substrate composed of a mixture with ver-miculite promoted the growth of tall fescue seedlings to a certain extend,but exceeding 25%may have inhibitory effects.The physical properties of Taihu Lake silt,especially bulk density,are key factors influencing its cultivation effects.关键词
