Abstract

In order to investigate the hydraulic characteristics of an optimized dual-layer inlet of the diversion tunnel and compare it with the layout of conventional inlets,three-dimensional numerical simulations using the VOF hydrodynamic model in Fluent software were conducted based on the design parameters of a pumped storage power station's diversion tunnel.By altering the width of the vertical shaft,specifically changing the ratio of the horizontal opening to the vertical shaft inlet area,removing the vertical shaft,and employing a conventional trumpet-shaped inlet,three different schemes for the dual-layer inlet were compared and analyzed.The focus of the analysis included four aspects:relative flow rate,Froude number of the water flow,relative pressure,and head loss coefficient.The research findings indicate that changes in the area ratio significantly affect the flow distribution and velocity profile of the dual-layer inlet.Compared to a horizontal inlet without the vertical shaft,the dual-layer inlet exhibits distinct advantages in increasing discharge capacity and reducing head loss at the inlet.Under free flow conditions,the discharge capacity of the dual-layer inlet approaches that of a dedicated trumpet-shaped spillway.The results demonstrate that the discharge from the dual-layer inlet is primarily through the lower outlet of the vertical shaft.In the free flow regime,the discharge from the dual-layer inlet is controlled by the downstream spillway's cross-sectional area.Its unique advantage lies in its ability to rapidly seal off the horizontal opening during diversion and promptly modify discharge outlets during operational periods to swiftly transition into operational mode.
