Abstract

Wheat is one of major causes of food allergy.Low prevalence of wheat allergy was demonstra-ted by results of some surveys in our country,but related studies were limited.Among anaphylaxis which in-duced by food,wheat account for high percentage as causative agent.Also,quality of life of wheat-allergic pa-tients is lower.It was shown that wheat was found to have high cross-reactivity with barley and rye,relatively low cross-reactivity with oats,millet,rice,buckwheat and quinoa,which is helpful to guide choosing alterna-tive foods for wheat allergic patients.Research on oral immunotherapy(OIT),as one of therapeutic choices for wheat allergy was relatively abundant,while high risk of side effects of OIT were demonstrated by the results,while low dose and long course OIT can be of potentiality for decreasing incidence of allergic reactions.In addi-tion,sIgE level and SPT result were not significantly correlated with severity of anaphylactic reaction and effica-cy of OIT treatment.The possibility of OIT to achieve long-term tolerability is still uncertain currently and fur-ther investigations should be done.Prevalence of IgE wheat allergy,proportion of anaphylaxis,quality of life as-sessment,cross-reactivity studies,oral immunotherapy and specific clinical types of IgE-mediated wheat allergy were reviewed in this article,offering better understanding of wheat allergic diseases and providing possible di-rections for further investigation in the field of wheat allergy in the future.
