Abstract

Reducing the adverse effect of ambient wind on the performance of air-cooled radiator can ensure its safe and economical operation.A new method to enhance the performance of indirect dry cooling tower(IDCT)is proposed by using underground air intake system,namely arranging the air cooling radiator in the underground space below the surface plane.The manuscript establishes the numerical model of IDCT with underground air intake system,and the air flow characteristics and thermodynamic characteristics of IDCT are investigated.Based on the mechanisms of the synergic regulation and mutual constraint between the condenser and the air-cooled radiator,the calculation model of exhaust steam pressure is established by combining the mechanism model and numerical simulation.In addition,the economy of IDCT with underground air intake system is calculated.The results show that under the wind speed of 4 m/s,although the cooling air flow and heat rejection of the windward radiator section decrease respectively by 14.5%and 12.4%,the cooling air flows of the side radiator section and the back radiator section increase respectively by 46.0%and 8.0%,resulting in the increase in the heat rejection by 30.9%and 3.2%respectively.Under the condition of high wind speed,the underground air intake system greatly reduces the adverse influence of ambient wind on exhaust steam pressure and has the ability to prevent ambient wind.A 660 MW unit with IDCT can save 9 554.3 t of standard coal and 10.94 million Yuan of fuel cost per year by using underground air intake system.
