A study on the guidance of vocational college counselors to new students in role adaptation based on Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory

Abstract
Objective Vocational college freshmen face varying degrees of adaptation difficulties in life,learning,socializing,evaluation,and future planning.This study aims at exploring how vocational college counselors can guide freshmen to quickly complete role adaptation based on Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory.Methods From September 2022 to June 2023,a questionnaire survey and interview method were used,with 744 nursing major freshmen of grade 2021 in Yuncheng Nursing Vocational College as the control group.The traditional quantitative assessment methods were used by counselors to guide freshmen;825 new nursing students in grade 2022 were selected as the experimental group,and the counselor guided the new students with the"Five Heart Education"method based on Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory.The role adaptation rates was compared when they are about to enter their sophomore year.Results The role adaptation rate was low when freshmen in the first year,the role adaptation rate of the experimental group students was significantly higher than that of the control group as they were about to enter their sophomore year.Conclusions The"Five Heart Education"education method constructed based on Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory can help vocational college counselors guide freshmen to adapt to their roles effectively.关键词
