Abstract
Properly increasing the concentrate-to-roughage ratio is a crucial dietary strategy for enhancing the production performance in ruminants.However,this approach also causes a risk of sub-acute ruminal acidosis.Previous studies have shown that Magnesium oxide solely or in combination with sodium bicarbonate could effectively alleviate sub-acute ruminal acidosis caused by high-concentrate diets.Magnesium oxide also contributes to the stabilization of the rumen environment and microbial flora while providing a potent rumen buffering capacity.Therefore,it could promote ruminant production performance to some extent.Hence,the present paper reviewed the rumen buffering mechanism of magnesium oxide,the factors influencing its buffering efficacy,and the progress of its application in ruminant production.This review aimed to provide a comprehensive theoretical reference for the rational utilization of magnesium oxide in ruminant production.关键词
