Abstract

This paper is an effort to investigate the effects of cold end temperature and initial moisture content on the frost heave characteristics of coarse-grained soil.The study involves carrying out the unidi-rectional freezing experiments in closed condition without water supplement,establishing a coupled ther-mo-hydro-mechanical model,and analyzing the frost heave characteristics of coarse-grained soil under the influence of multiple factors.The results indicate that when the cold end is-20℃,the cooling rate of each soil layer in the freezing zone is approximately 3 to 4 times that at-5℃,and the freezing depth of the soil increases by about41.1 mm compared to-5℃.For saturated soil samples at the cold end,the ice volume content is 71.6%,leading to a frost heave rate about 4.5 times than that of samples with a 5%moisture content.The temperature gradient within the soil is greater and the cooling rate is faster at lower cold-end temperatures.The soil moisture content is positively correlated with ice volume content and the thickness of the ice lens,and has a more pronounced effect on the rate of frost heave.
