Frost heave characteristics of coarse-grained soil based on unsaturated seepage flow

Abstract
This paper is an effort to investigate the effects of cold end temperature and initial moisture content on the frost heave characteristics of coarse-grained soil.The study involves carrying out the unidi-rectional freezing experiments in closed condition without water supplement,establishing a coupled ther-mo-hydro-mechanical model,and analyzing the frost heave characteristics of coarse-grained soil under the influence of multiple factors.The results indicate that when the cold end is-20℃,the cooling rate of each soil layer in the freezing zone is approximately 3 to 4 times that at-5℃,and the freezing depth of the soil increases by about41.1 mm compared to-5℃.For saturated soil samples at the cold end,the ice volume content is 71.6%,leading to a frost heave rate about 4.5 times than that of samples with a 5%moisture content.The temperature gradient within the soil is greater and the cooling rate is faster at lower cold-end temperatures.The soil moisture content is positively correlated with ice volume content and the thickness of the ice lens,and has a more pronounced effect on the rate of frost heave.关键词
