Abstract

To enhance the performance of ion exchange membranes in electrodeionization(EDI)systems,a study was conducted to explore the use of a hot-pressing process as a substitute for the traditional calendering process in the fabrication of heterogeneous polypropylene ion exchange membranes.Polypropylene was utilized as the fundamental skeletal material and was mixed with ion exchange resin.The material was then placed in a mold and formed into the desired membrane shape and size through a hot-pressing machine.This method aimed to increase the content of ion exchange resin within the membrane to improve ion exchange efficiency,while also reducing waste from the production process and lowering costs.Through experimental comparison,it was determined that an ion exchange resin content of 64%was the optimal formulation.Under this formulation,the preparation conditions were further optimized to find that the best hot-pressing temperature was 230 ℃ with a pressure of 30 MPa.Under these conditions,the ion exchange capacity of the cation exchange membrane was increased to 2.351 mmol/g,and the ion transfer rate was maintained at 0.895.The study demonstrated that by adjusting the hot-pressing conditions,such as temperature,pressure,and the content of ion exchange resin,the performance of the resulting cation exchange membranes was significantly improved.
