The Development of Digital Economy and Urban Contraction:Evidence from Night Lighting Data

Abstract
Digital economy is becoming a new kinetic energy of social and economic development,which has a far-reaching impact on restraining urban contraction and promoting coordinated urban development.By using the night lighting data from 2011 to 2021,the urban contraction was identified,and the influence of digital economy development on urban contraction was investigated.It is found that the development of digital economy can significantly inhibit urban contraction.The effect of digital economy development on restraining urban contraction is more obvious in shrinking cities and areas with low marketization and low education level.Urban income gap,industrial structure upgrading and urban innovation and entrepreneurship are important channels for the development of digital economy to curb urban contraction.Strengthening the construction of network infrastructure can be more conducive to the digital economy to curb serious urban contraction.Further research shows that the influence of digital economy development on urban contraction has a threshold effect,that is,when the development of digital economy reaches a certain level,the inhibitory effect on urban contraction will appear,and the inhibitory effect has the advantage of increasing marginal return.This study is helpful to reveal the mechanism of digital economy development affecting urban contraction,and provides empirical support for how to effectively restrain urban contraction by using digital economy.关键词
