Media multitasking and its impact on depressive mood in primary and secondary school students:The mediating role of basic needs and self-control

Abstract
Objective:To explore the relationship between media multitasking behavior and depression in primary and middle school students,and to clarify its relationship with self-controland basic psychologicalneeds.Methods:A total of 2147 valid questionnaires were collected from primary and secondary schools in Chengdu and Chongqing by means of questionnaire survey and random sampling method.The media multitasking questionnaire was used to measure the media use,while the Children'sDepression Inventory,Dual-Mode of Self-Control Scale and Basic Psychological Needs Scale were used to measure the individual depression level,impulse control,and basic psycho-logical needs.Results:①Media multitasking behavior was positively correlated with depression score(r=0.341,P<0.01),media multitasking behavior and basic psychological needs(r=-0.352,P<0.01),self-control was negatively correlated(r=-0.262,P<0.01).(2)The mediating effect results showed that media multitasking behavior had a sig-nificant direct effect on depression in primary and secondary school students,with the effect value of 0.045.Basic psy-chological needs and self-control played a partial mediating role between media multitasking behavior and depres-sion,with the effect values of 0.038 and 0.007 respectively,accounting for 61.290%and 11.290%of the mediating effect;The mediating effect of basic psychological needs was significantly greater than that of self-control.Conclu-sion:Media multitasking can predict depression in primary and secondary school students.Individuals with strong control and high basic psychological needs tend to operate single media and have a low risk of depression关键词
