Abstract

In recent years,the problem of excessive emissions of exhaust gases such as greenhouse gases has become increasingly serious in China,which is not conducive to the sustainable development of the eco-environment.Green innovation is a significant way for companies to coordinate the contradiction between production and the environment,promoting sustainable economic development.Under the background of China's'dual carbon'development strategy goal,it is important to study how to improve company green innovation.The literature focuses on how to improve company green innovation through external macroenvironmental regulation and internal company incentives.The internal incentive of green innovation is affected by external environmental supervision.However,the current pollution penalties on companies mainly comes from environmental supervision departments,which are prone to regulatory omissions.Social groups such as minority shareholders monitoring of corporate emissions behavior is relatively more direct.Under the background of the rapid development of network informatization,the internet public opinion of minority shareholders will have an important impact on company decision-making behavior.On the one hand,the dissemination of negative information through internet public opinion can inhibit negative behaviors such as corporate violations by enhancing supervision.On the other hand,the attention of internet public opinion can inhibit company violations by enhancing supervision.Whether and how to promote green innovation under the pressure of internet public opinion has not been discussed in prior research.This paper studies it from the perspective of the internet public opinion supervision,which is in line with the current strategic direction of China's'dual carbon'development strategy goal in terms of studying the role of internet public opinion on company green innovation from the micro company level and promoting the effective improvement of environmental quality. Based on the perspective of the internet public opinion supervision,this paper analyzes the impact of internet public opinion on company green innovation through supervision mechanisms,reputation deterrence mechanisms,and negative emotion mechanisms and proposes research hypotheses.In the empirical analysis of internet public opinion and green innovation,this paper selects A-share listed companies from 2008 to 2018 in China as research samples,uses the stock bar data of the east money in the CNRDS database to measure the degree of internet public opinion concern,and uses the number of green innovation patents to measure the green innovation level.This study has found that:1)internet public opinion can effectively promote company green innovation.2)Internet public opinion improves green innovation mainly through the supervision effect and reputation deterrence effect.3)Considering the heterogeneity,the impact of internet public opinion on green innovation is strengthened in companies that are state-owned,larger,and have higher agency costs.4)Furthermore,internet public opinion not only increases the number of green innovations but also improves the quality of green innovation.The research conclusion of this paper shows that internet public opinion pressure encourages companies to actively fulfill the social responsibility of environmental protection in improving green innovation. The theoretical contributions of this paper are as follows:First,it supplements the influencing factors of company green innovation from the perspective of internet public opinion.Internet public opinion attention,being different from traditional media reports,can effectively avoid biased reports and selective supervision,and can effectively promote green innovation.Second,this paper expands the economic consequences research of internet public opinion from the perspective of company environmental protection behavior,indicating that internet public opinion can improve the attention of companies to environmental protection and promote company green innovation.Finally,it shows that social groups such as minority shareholders,with the function of environmental protection supervision,are important groups in terms of participation in supervision and improvement of the green innovation of companies.At the same time,it also shows that the internet public opinion platform has gradually become a useful tool for minority shareholders to participate in environmental supervision,which provides some basis for such groups to restrict corporate pollution behavior and promote green innovation.Regarding policy implications,the government should actively introduce corresponding environmental supervision and network reporting measures to encourage social individuals to participate in environmental supervision.Companies should pay attention to the focus of the internet public opinion in a timely manner,understand the feedback of social individuals on the improvement of corporate pollution behavior and green innovation,and contribute to accelerating the realization of the'double carbon'strategic goal.
