Abstract

Bio-hydrogen production is a technology to convert the chemical energy stored in organics to hydrogen by the efficient hydrogen producing bacteria in nature.Based on the previous studies on the optimization of hydrogen production conditions for single hydrogen producing bacteria,a co-culture system for hydrogen production was constructed using Clostridium butyricum LQ25 and Enterobacter aerogenes AJ110637,and the corresponding hydrogen production performance and synergistic effect were subsequently evaluated with glucose as the substrate.As a result,the co-culture system of C.butyricum LQ25 and E.aerogenes AJ110637 could provide the highest hydrogen production efficiency under the conditions with the inoculum ratio of 9∶1,initial pH 7.0,and fermentation temperature of 40℃,with a maximum hydrogen production of 354.05 mL H2/g glucose,which was 31.71%and 70.59%higher than C.butyricum and E.aerogenes systems,respectively.Notably,the addition of 1.0 g/L calcium carbonate could significantly increase the hydrogen yield by 21.80%compared with the control group,likely through alleviating the acidity of the co-culture system.Overall,the hydrogen production rate in the co-culture system of C.butyricum and E.aerogenes was higher than either single system,reflecting the synergistic effect of C.butyricum and E.aerogenes to a certain extent.
