Abstract

As a mixed multiphase special roadbed filler,high liquid limit clay gravel has adverse engineering char-acteristics such as high natural moisture content,strong hydrophilicity,and difficulty in compaction during con-struction.How to control the compaction parameters to ensure the compaction quality of the roadbed has been a key issue whether high liquid limit clay gravel can be directly used as roadbed filler.Therefore,taking a typical high liquid limit clay gravel on a highway in the southwest region of China as the research object,the compaction con-struction technology that matched the structural design and filling requirements of the high liquid limit clay gravel roadbed was systematic studied to propose a compaction quality control standard and rolling parameters for the high liquid limit clay gravel roadbed based on the equilibrium moisture content and long-term performance of the roadbed.The research results indicate that high liquid limit clay gravel can be directly used as filling material for lower embankments by controlling compaction parameters such as compaction machinery,compaction method,number of compaction passes,loose paving thickness,and compaction moisture content;The compaction control standard for high liquid limit clay gravel subgrade should not be less than 85%,and the compaction moisture con-tent should be controlled within 35%;It is recommended to use a medium-sized 14 ton compaction machinery,and the compaction method should mainly be static pressure or static pressure+weak vibration;The number of rolling passes should not be less than 3 times,and the rolling should be stopped before the filling material becomes notice-ably soft and elastic;The thickness of loose paving should not exceed 25 cm.After about 6 months of natural settle-ment period,the roadbed tends to stabilize and the engineering quality can be guaranteed.The research results can provide theoretical and technical support for the rational and effective utilization of high liquid limit clay gravel.
